What is Chinquapin? Chinquapin is a type of bush that grows after a fire. Chinquapin is also a literary journal published by UCSC. Chinquapin is a collection of voices, the voices of UCSC students, raised each with a message that they want to sound. Each message may not be the same, but they are our messages.

We are the new generation, and like chinquapin growing on the burnt-out wasteland of worn out thoughts, our words are the new growth. The revolutions of time bring about their changes; day turns into night, winter into spring. Burnt land grows new life. Human society rolls over from one generation to the next, each taking the wisdom and knowledge of their parents and building on it, but before we can do that, we have to overthrow their idealogical authority. We must rebel against what we were handed down, only then can we create something of our own out of the ashes.

From the fires of internal revolution, Chinquapin will be the herald of new growth. It is time for us to make our own choices, forge our own philosophies, and, as Ghandi advised, bring about the change we want to see in the world. Thought is the source, from it grows words, and from words come actions. You provide the thought, and Chinquapin will give you words.

You have a chance to say something in front of all the people, what are you prepared to say?
